Time Flies

Image
Time flies but this guy doesn't fly anymore.  I am still testing the built in macro capabilities of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.  This is not a perfect macro shot so I decided to run it through the Prisma app to see what kind of fly artwork I could produce.

Fountain at RBG Hendrie

Image
Here are a few shots of the fountain at Royal Botanical Gardens Hendrie Park.   One uses the Live feature on the iPhone to show motion blur in the water.  The other two feature the gate leading to the fountain.

Reflecting on Quidi Vidi

Image
Still playing with my photos from last month's visit to Quidi Vidi, here is a nice fishing scene then cropped with the Luminar NEO app, and water adjusted in the Reflect app.  I do have fun with my editing apps!

Boat Edits

Image
One thing I love about the Prisma app on my iPad is its ability to quickly generate such a wide variety of looks.  Here are two Prisma edits of two men working on a boat at Quidi Vidi.

Filleting the Cod

Image
Back in Quidi Vidi Harbour, this fisherman is cleaning and filleting today's catch.  From the original, I used the MySketch app on the iPad to give it a drawing look.

Hiding in the Garden

Image
In the gardens at RBG Hendrie Park was a bunny trying to act still so I wouldn't notice him and a gnome hidden behind some bushes who was way better at beng still!

Lonely Leaf

Image
Here is a lonely leaf on an empty bench in Royal Botanical Garden's Hendrie Garden, shot from low angle to highlight the leaf.

Boats Out of Water

Image
Here are a couple of boats at Quidi Vidi harbour that look like they would prefer to be in the water.

Quidi Vidi Harbour

Image
Here is a panorama of a scene at Quidi Vidi Harbour in Newfoundland, complete with fishing boats and shacks.  Quidi Vidi is an old part of St. John's dating back to 1600 when fishermen from Britain made it a regular stop.

Busy Beetle

Image
Like yesterday's bee at RBG, this little fellow was also spotted at Hendrie Gardens in last week's photo outing.   Again, the built in macro on the iPhone 14 Pro Max was up to the task of getting close up.  I like the shiny green on this guy.

Bee at RBG

Image
Taking a break from posts about St. John's, here is a bee at Royal Botanical Garden's Hendrie Park last Friday.   It is taken with the built-in macro capability of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.  I'm happy with the detail that was captured in this image and the colourful flower that gives a backdrop to the bee.

Cape Spear (2 of 2)

Image
Here are a couple more shots of the lighthouse at Cape Spear, Newfoundland.  The day I visited was rather overcast and gloomy so I decided to play with sky replacements in NEO.

Cape Spear (1 of 2)

Image
In these next two posts I will include a couple of shots of the lighthouse at Cape Spear, the Eastern-most point in North America.  The colour photo uses the stairs as leading lines to take your eye into the photo and up the hill to the lighthouse.  For the black and white photo, I used some iPad apps to decolour the original colour capture and then enhance the light at the top of the lighthouse.

Night View of Harbour

Image
Here is a night view of St. John's Harbour in Newfoundland with "The Narrows" (entrance to the harbour) in the top left of the photo.  I took the photo from my hotel room last Saturday and it was a good thing as thick fog wiped out this view for the rest of the time I was there.

Jellybean Houses

Image
One of the unique aspects of streetscapes in St. John's, Newfoundland is the brightly coloured houses a.k.a. "jellybean" row houses.  There are numerous theories of how this started.  Some say that the fishermen couldn't see their houses in the fog when returning from sea so they painted them in bright colours.  Others say that paint was an expensive commodity but they needed paint for their boats so they used leftover on their houses.  And others explain that men would stagger home after an evening at the pub and would wander into the wrong house - so colour became an important way for them to find the way to the right house.  Whatever the explanation it is an absolutely beautiful feature of St. John's!

Cannons at the Ready

Cannons at the 18th-century at Queen's Battery, Signal Hill overlooking "The Narrows" at the entrance to St John's harbour in Newfoundland.

View From Signal Hill

Image
This is the view looking down at St. John's Harbour and City from the top of Signal Hill (.... on a day when it is not foggy!).

Aging the Photos

Image
I took the original photo (not shown here) on our iPhone tour to Puddicombe Farms and later used the DistressedFX app and the Formulas app to produce some 'aging' variations.

Canada Day Celebration!

Image
Yesterday evening we enjoyed the Canada Day fireworks from a vantage point in a friend's backyard.  I was able to capture many images with my iPhone 14 Pro Max.  This is one of the handheld shots from last night.  Happy Canada Day!

Yay! Found it!

Image
I finally found the proverbial 'needle in the haystack'.  Yay!
